Every morning, I wake up and feel lot of pain in the sole of feet on standing up. What is the problem with me?


Generally, the morning foot pain is associated with many people, especially older people. In our lifetime, we cannot imagine the extent of distance we walk. Also, we tend to ignore one of the most crucial part of our body, soles of feet, as they bear all the pressure of running, standing and walking. With time, you feel acute pain in your foot, while walking or when you wake up in the morning. There are 26 bones in the foot that are supported with associated ligaments, making a structure which permits it to act as a lever and shock absorber. Extra pressure on feet can result in pain that can last for limited time, long time or life time.

Foot Pain (Arch, Ball, Heel, & Toe Pain) can be a result of some problem in some region of the foot. The source of pain can be blood vessels, bones, fascia, ligaments, muscles, nerves, skin, tendons, or toenail beds. Generally, the medical practitioner narrow down the pain by its location, on the basis of few factors. Pain, or discomfort of feet can also be caused by poor biomechanical alignment of inappropriate footwear.

  • Arthritis

  • Conditions causing inflammation
  • Diabetic neuropathy
  • Flatfeet
  • Injury to the nerves of the feet

The most common symptom of heel pain is that it is pessimal during the morning hours, when you get out of the bed. You may also feel arch pain. To treat the heel pain or any other foot pain, it is suitable to say that you should start treatment for Plantar Fascia / Plantar Fasciitis. For this, following care and treatment should be followed:
  • Take as much of REST as you can
  • Exercise: Try stretching your heel and foot muscles
  • Allopathic medicine: Consult a doctor and take over-the-counter pain relievers
  • Medical Shoes: Wear only those shoes that have a cushioned sole and good arch support

What is heel spur and what are its treatments?


You must have seen images of heel spurs on Internet to understand what it is and what are its treatments. Heel spurs are caused when the bottom of heel bone grows abnormally.  Its causes can be irregular posture or walking, anomalous gait, or unsuitable shoes. It is estimated that 1 in 10 people has this disease, among which 1 in 20 people will have pain in the feet.

Are there any self care treatment for foot pain?

Yes! Foot pain can be treated with a combination of Rest and Cold Therapy, ONLY IF the pain is caused due to overuse or an injury. Herein, you need to put ice on the affected area for fifteen minutes approximately and repeat it at least six times a day. Along with this, you should activities that may lead to aggravation of the pain. You can also consider taking some over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications.

I am diabetic. Are there any precautions I should be aware of?

Yes! If you are diabetic, then your minor injuries can quickly turn into major injuries. Hence, if you have diabetes, then you should consider the below mentioned points for proper foot care:

Conduct inspection on your feet in the following way:
  1. Look for redness, pain, and/or blisters on your feet and between your toes.
  2. Wash your feet intraday with soap and warm water. Use a good quality towel to pat dry the feet and space between the toes.
  3. Always keep the skin moist by using a good and effective lotion
  4. Do not walk barefoot. Also, it is recommended, not to wear sandals and flip-flops.
  5. You should wear cotton socks with shoes.
